It was an enormous task to get Escuela San Miguel built and operating, but the
work does not end there. If Projects for People is to continue operations and
upgrade the facilities to give the best possible education to the people of the
Cardenas region, more contributions are necessary. Keep in mind, this not a
charitable donation with a one time result, but a gift of education, skills and the
tools necessary for self-sufficiency to hundreds of families.
The seemingly endless circle of poverty, both of knowledge and wealth, can be
steadily broken We are building a foundation for true independence for the
native people of Cardenas. However it takes time, hard work, determination and
contributions from good people like you to make it happen. Your contribution of
money, tools or even a used but updated computer for example, can have a
genuine impact of learning for the rest of their lives. Truly, life enriched by caring
individuals like yourself.
Listed below are the items PfP currently needs to advance the dream into reality. If you have further
questions about how your contribution will be used, please feel free to contact us.
Computers with Windows XP
Fortunately, computer classes are in high demand and we currently have more
than enough monitors. However, the computers now in use are a mixed variety of
older machines, mostly with outdated software, small memory chips and limited
RAM. The students need to learn on machines with the capabilities and
programs used worldwide and increase the value of their education.
Student Scholarships
Students are asked to pay $1.70/month for enrollment. This even more than
some students can afford. We believe than no one should be turned away from
ESM due to lack of funds. We, therefore, have set up a scholarship
arrangement. There are currently 20 students on full scholarship. A donation of
$20.40 will pay for one student for the year, or $510 will provide yearlong
scholarships for 25 people! 255 students are currently enrolled.
Books
The English as a Second Language (ESL) class is in need of texts, dictionaries
and practice reading/study guides for beginning, intermediate and advanced ESL
students at the school. These are necessary for students to advance in their
English language learning. Additionally, ESM has started the only library serving
this population and Spanish Language books for all ages are needed to
complement our initial offerings. The books are necessary to help the culture
advance.
Metal & Woodworking Tools
Metal and woodworking tools are needed to furnish our school with reasonably
modern equipment for classroom and “shop/hands-on” teaching. The tools are
used to train students in their actual use. Upon completion of the classes the
students will be able to use these tools and machines to build items for their
household and for sale. They will also have acquired more advanced skills
needed by employers when applying for work, and thus be better positioned for
employment opportunities.
Projects For People Staff Person
A staff person is needed to help manage our activities in Nicaragua. It is not
possible for PfP directors to be on-site full-time. Duties include liaison with
project directors and committees, maintenance and upkeep of buildings and
grounds, water & sewer systems, equipment, and tools. This person must be
bilingual and be in communication with PfP president via telephone when
president is in the U.S., providing updates on project situations. Additionally, this
person assists directors in carrying out plans particularly when a director is not
available on-site.
Operations
PfP is committed to funding the school for at least three years. Without outside
funding the school could not operate. The current budget needed for operation
of the school is $12,000 (U.S. Dollars). This money essentially pays staff and
teachers salaries, electricity, supplies, and transportation of students living in the
distant countryside.
