ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
1. Escuela San Miguel
Completed the construction and furnishing of a 5,000 sq. ft. vocational school in
Cardenas, Nicaragua, with staff and volunteers. Features include wood and
metalworking tools, computers, desks, chairs, sewing machines, English as a
second language books, teacher’s guides and student dictionaries.
2. Sewing School & Workshop
Completed the construction, furnishing and supply of a 750 sq. ft. sewing school
and workshop near Tola, Nicaragua. PfP is helping the women form a cooperative
to make and sell clothes. Additionally, four students have been employed as a
direct result of the skills learned in woodworking class.
3. Higher Education
The vocational school has placed one alumnus of English and computer classes
into a University. Staff paid with PfP funds assisted the student with the
scholarship application and followed through with the student. This student would
never be in a University without PfP assistance through the vocational school.
4. Developing Skilled Workers
Placed two graduates of woodworking classes with an American owned company
building Pacific beach front houses. The owner has conferred with the school
about the need for nine more wood craftsmen and will hire from the school as the
students become trained.
5. Economic & Social Advancement
Additionally, students utilizing the school now have a chance for economic and
social advances in their lives. With the continuation of school courses more
students will advance to a stage of employability. Bilingual students are needed
throughout Nicaragua for a growing tourist industry. Computer skills are also
needed by many businesses throughout the country. With sewing skills women
can make clothes for their families and to sell for much needed income. As an
aside, the school provides hope for a population very much in need of that. The
school has become a bit of a beacon, and albeit a 2nd home for some of the
students. They look forward to their time at the school and linger beyond class
hours for the social contact apart from the routine of mostly desperate lives.
CURRENT GOALS
We are very proud that Projects for People has raised enough money, materials, and most importantly
volunteer time and energy to complete Escuela San Miguel in 2005. The emphasis now shifts for more
furnishings updated machinery and staff necessary to train the residents in these skills. It is also our
commitment to assist employment and advanced education opportunities with the use of the skills obtained
to build family self sufficiency in the area
THE FUTURE
Projects for People has a plan for long term funding to ensure the Escuela San Miguel facility continues to
succeed in training people for the future. Once the first large group is trained in building, carpentry,
electrical and plumbing, they would build a much needed hotel in San Jorge. The hotel would be staffed by
local Nicaraguans and would not be operated for individual profit, but for the expenses of the school. Dean
and Ann White have already met with the local Mayor and City Council of San Jorge who are receptive to
the idea and want to help. The long term goal of the organization is to help build an ongoing infrastructure
that is self sustaining, so the community no longer needs to reach out its hand to the international
community for support, but has the ability to help itself.
