As the members of the Eau Claire community have heard about these worthy efforts, they have begun to
chip in to make the school become a reality.
Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society at University of
Wisconsin - Eau Claire held a fundraiser on campus to raise money for textbooks, the Chippewa Valley
Technical College is meeting to decide how they might get involved in the efforts and the
Eau Claire Leader
Telegram featured a front page story with the headline “Man builds futures in Nicaragua”.

NOTE: PfP has chosen to work in Nicaragua due to the value obtained for the dollar and the fact that
Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in the hemisphere.
HISTORY
Projects for People, Inc. (PfP) began in 2002 when Eau Claire, Wisconsin
native Dean White, along with his wife Ann, began donating his time to assist at
the
Casa Asis Orphanage in Nicaragua.  Although the orphans were well cared
for and well fed thanks to international support, the surrounding communities
were poverty stricken with no hope for the future and the Whites felt compelled
to do more.  Their idea was that their efforts had to move beyond charity and
the basic feeding, clothing and sheltering of the people to helping them to help
themselves. Although the people of the region want to become self-sustaining,
they had no way to even begin.
The White’s wanted to help to provide that vital link. Their concept was to build
a school/workshop to train the people in carpentry, welding, electricity,
plumbing, sewing, English language and hair styling and cutting. It would not
only be a school, but a place to work as well. In late afternoon and evenings the
building, machines and tools would be made available to craftsman who have
no tools or resources so they can build, sew and manufacture goods for sale.
Although their efforts remain primarily grassroots, the White’s realized that in
order to attract outside support, they wanted to offer contributors some tax
benefit so they filed for, and received, tax-exempt status as Projects for People,
Inc.
In many ways, Projects for People has become a family project for Dean White and his three brothers, Jeff,
Pete and Ken, who all grew up in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and have contributed in many ways, from financial
support to arranging for shipments of supplies to Nicaragua.  Dean and Ann White lived a majority of 2004
on the site in Cardenas and participate daily in the construction of the school.  The school, Escuela San
Miguel (St. Michael’s School) is named for a fifth White brother, Michael, who recently died from a rare
blood disorder.   He was formerly Eau Claire North High School’s assistant principal and was devoted to the
educational process, so this school is a fitting tribute to his life.
